Dark and light

I have been reading this new painting book my husband just bought me and it is interesting the author explains shadows. Darkness or shadows are nothing on there own but they emphasize the light and repeat the subject that your painting. I have been playing with the concept of having a brightly lit subject with very dark values around it. I had a little trouble focusing on my color scheme in this one but it is meant to be complimentary (dark green and light red).
