Manistee oil painting 34x 24

The Bible says the heavens declare the glory of God after reading that I decided it was important to paint clouds accurately, before I would just put some white fluff and hope no one would notice. Painting clouds is one of the most difficult subjects for me, they are very subtle and I’m not a subtle person. I have just started reading several books about it, although none of them agree on anything I think they have given me some insight about cloud painting. For example lets start with the sky it’s lighter the closer to earth it gets and some claim it has a hint of green where it meets the earth.

Sky-So in terms of oil paint colors the top of the sky would be a medium-light value of ultra-marine blue (sometimes I add a dash of burnt umber)

-the middle of the sky would be an even lighter value colbalt blue and white

-the bottom where it meets the ground is mostly white with a hint of pthalo green

Clouds-now once that is dry to start on clouds, this is what I did pretty much step by step:

-ultramarine blue and a lot of white to form the basic shapes of the clouds

-added ultramarine blue and alisarin crimson and white to make a light purple for the bottom of the clouds

-added some alzirian crimson and cadmium red very lightly in the middle of the clouds

-added cadmium yellow and white near the top to make some of the clouds stick out at you (not all the way to the top so there is still some of the ultramarine blue left to add depth in the clouds)

I use water based oil paint so this should be dry in a week or two, rather than regular oil paint which could take up to six months.
