Can Salvation Be Lost?

if by grace, then [is it] no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if [it be] of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.Romans 11:6

I frequently run into people who say they have asked Jesus to save them before but do not know if they are saved any more. I ask them several questions. Did you understand that he died for you and was raised from the dead? Did you understand you were on your way to hell for your sin and when you asked him to save you you were receiving a pardon for you sin? Then I explain to them that if they were genuine about asking him to save them that salvation can not be lost. If we could do any thing to lose it we would never have gotten it as a free gift to begin with. In other words we do not work for salvation so we cannot lose it by not working.

Then I explain to them that all believers should be telling other people about Jesus so that other can be saved from hell too. It is a great waste if we will not tell others about the Lord. Every thing but what is done for Christ will be lost. We can not say if someone will not do the Lords work they are not saved, but they will suffer loss. “he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved;” 1 Corinthians 3:15

The other misconception I run into frequently is that people have to clean up their lives and then come to Jesus. “some day I will clean up my life and come to Jesus”. This idea is totally wrong, when we come to Jesus he cleans up our life, if we let him. No not all Christians live holy lives they are limiting what God can do through them because of this and they will be ashamed. But if we let him he can do great things through us that we could never do in our own strength. I have seen it happen in my own life. He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, [and] lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;113:7

He maketh the barren woman to keep house, [and to be] a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD. 113:9 This verse kind of stumped me the first few times I read it. I know in the Bible God has made several barren women “joyful mothers of children”, remember Sarah, Hannah, and Elizabeth. But I think it also applies to soulwinning. Being a soulwinner you become a spiritual parent to people you never would have met other wise and it can be a joyful expierence.

Sometimes it can be hard for people to tell if they are saved because of the amount of personal sin in their life. But if they were genuine about it, they were saved. Reading the Bible everyday, praying everyday, singing to the Lord and telling others about Jesus helps us to see God working in our lives regularly. Because of that we know he has saved us. “believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life” 1 John 5:12 and we can have “the joy of thy salvation;” Psalm 51:12 when we are walking with the Lord.

I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:39
