The Servant

“Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he [was] the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of [many] colours. ” Genesis 37:3

This painting of Joseph  always reminds me of being a servant. Joseph was treated badly by his brothers. Here in the Bible we are told his “brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us?” Genesis 37:8 They mocked the dreams God had given him for his life and the success he thought he would have. His brothers had selfish and jealous behavior towards him…

” let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. ” Genesis 37:20. Here we are told his brothers ” lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty [pieces] of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.” Genesis 37:28 Even after his brothers sold Joseph, he reacted different than we would normally think to react because he knew and trusted God. They sold him to slave traders and he could have lost his life. But the Lord looked out for him and he became a great success second in line to pharaoh in Egypt. “Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. ” Genesis 41:41 Times became difficult in his land and his brothers came to him not knowing who he was. He could have had them killed on the spot but instead he provided for them and God was glorified. ” Joseph’s ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt. ” Genesis 42:3 “here will I nourish thee; for yet [there are] five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty. ” Genesis 45:11 Joseph was a servant. As a result God gave him power and riches, which he used to help his brothers, and his country in an extra ordinary way. This certainly was painting a picture of Yeshua- Jesus for us all. Yeshua-Jesus could have come and commanded a kingdom, he rightfully deserved a kingdom, power, riches and glory. But instead Yeshua-Jesus came into a humble home, born of a Jewish virgin who would have been an outcast in her day. ” the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. ” Isaiah 7:14 With rumors spinning about their family constantly I am sure. Then he lived with Joseph as his step father as the carpenters son. He did not choose to live in a home of luxury. “Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? ” Matthew 13:55

He had brothers and knew what it is like to live with suffering, sorrow, rejection and pain. Yeshua-Jesus is exactly what we are told to expect from the Messiah in the Prophets. “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief:” Isaias 53:3 He was a servant to others, even when they mocked him, He kept serving. “The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. ” Mark 11:5 He then died on the cross for our sins. “they pierced my hands and my feet. ” Psalm 22:16. Yeshua-Jesus never quit serving, and praying even as he died on the cross for the sins of the world he was winning another soul, the thief next to him on another cross.

As I am reading in 2 Timothy right now the Bible talks about being a servant God. This has helped and challenged me. “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” 2 Timothy 2:3 He tells us to endure hardness as a good soldier. Why? from what I know about the military, they train you hard to create loyalty under difficult circumstances. The Bible says we should endure hardness. ” No man that warreth -entangleth himself with the affairs of [this] life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.” 2 Timothy 2:4. Yeshua-Jesus was also a strong soldier, to go and endure all the shame and reproach, and die on the cross knowing it would happen because He is the all knowing creator. That takes a strong soldier, and a compassion for lost people. If He had not chosen to do that we would all be in hell.

Then a verse that jumped out at me says “I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” 2 Timothy 2:10. A Christian needs to be loyal so that souls will accept Christ and go to heaven. If not an eternity in hell is what they will receive. Our loyalty as a servant of God is important. Not one person or soul is replaceable! ” Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” 2 timothy 2:19. This is not an easy thing to do! But for the sake of souls we must “call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” 2 Timothy 2:22. The Bible tells us “And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all [men], apt to teach, patient,In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And [that] they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” 2 Timothy 2:24-26″ Being a loyal servant of the Lord requires faithfulness and sharing the gospel with the lost.

Everyday is a new exciting adventure and challenge with the Bible. If you are not a soulwinner, let the Bible challenge you to be. There is nothing more exciting than meeting new people and helping them make a decision to be part of the kingdom of heaven for an eternity. “Whoso ever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13 Have you made the decision to accept Yeshua-Jesus as your savior yet? If you have genuinely asked him to save you then you will be saved. “if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9. If not you should pray and ask Yeshua-Jesus, who died for your sins to save you right now so you can go to heaven, none of us knows what the future may bring.

And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all [men],2 Timothy 2:24
