Why Do We Have Thanks Giving?
Why do we have thanksgiving? It seems that many do not even know what it is about. Honestly until I became a Christian I did not either. I just got excited about the turkey and potatoes. Thanksgiving was actually about the pilgrims, they lived in England in the 1600s. They loved the the God of the Bible, and wanted to do what God said. What would seem to be quite a misfortune on their part was that the king wanted every one to go to his church or possibly face death. The pilgrims decided we must find a new country where we can worship God freely. They eventually boarded the mayflower putting their lives completely in the hands of their God. After landing they read psalms 100 and prayed and thanked God for his great provision.“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” psalm 100.
The pilgrims found after their arrival two Indian houses on shore which appeared to be abandon. They apparently found corn and beans which meant so much to them because of their lack of food supply. They were again thankful for Gods perfect provision, corn at the right place at the right time which they used to plant corn they needed. They faced horrible sickness and half of them died over the first winter. At one point only forty seven colonists were remaining and a half of a dozen were well enough to care for the rest. Yet through the provision of God, still they made it and today has become the worlds leading Christian nation. America still maintains her freedom of religion and speech and is like no other country on earth. That is why we use the term American-exceptional-ism. Let believers not lose sight of the great freedom we have in America and continue to share the gospel with those who will otherwise spend eternity in hell if they do not “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Acts 16:31
“proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof:” Leviticus 25:10
